KES School Council is excited to share that we will be offering Kernel’s Popcorn once again!

New this year is that all popcorn sales will be done exclusively through School Cash Online. Before we open up popcorn sales we want to ensure all of our families have time to register for an account with School Cash Online.

School Cash Online is a convenient and easy to use on-line system that allows you to make purchases from home. It supports various payment methods and in this Covid-19 era eliminates money handling at school.

For families new to the School Board or for those who have not yet registered for an account, you can create your account by following these instructions. SCHOOL CASH ONLINE SET UP INSTRUCTIONS

For families who already have School Cash Online accounts, watch for an email later this month notifying of your new item, popcorn is available for purchase. Please note, that your School Cash Online account follows you and your student(s) so if you are joining us from Castlefrank or another school in the District there is no need to set up another account.

Watch for additional emails on signing up for popcorn later this month with all of the details. Popcorn days will coincide with School Spirit days and start in January. Flavours available this year are Butter, Salt and Vinegar and Low-Fat Caramel. Unfortunately, individual bags of popcorn will not be available for sale on popcorn days; to participate, your student will need to subscribe for the entire program through the School Cash Online system.

A meeting to focus on our fundraising efforts for 2021-2022!  Since our first Council meeting, members have been busy working on Spirit Wear, Popcorn and a series of joint restaurant fundraisers with CES. We will use this time to pull our plan together, look at resources needed and identify who can lead the various initiatives.

Description: This workshop examines some of the moral dilemmas that kids face in their online activities and shares some strategies to help them build the social and emotional intelligence that’s needed to support ethical decision making – and build resiliency if things go wrong. The tutorial focuses on respect for: people’s personal information by not oversharing; people’s feelings by not participating in bullying or being a passive bystander; and intellectual property by understanding copyright and plagiarism.

Your Host: Matthew Johnson, Director of Education
Matthew Johnson is the Director of Education for MediaSmarts, Canada’s center for digital and media literacy. He is the author of many of MediaSmarts’ lessons, parent materials and interactive resources and a lead on MediaSmarts’ Young Canadians in a Wired World research project. As an acknowledged expert in digital literacy and its implementation in Canadian curricula, Matthew is the architect of MediaSmarts’ Use, Understand, Create: Digital Literacy Framework for Canadian K-12 Schools. He has contributed blogs and articles to websites and magazines around the world as well as presenting MediaSmarts’ materials on topics such as copyright, cyberbullying, body image and online hate to parliamentary committees, academic conferences and governments and organizations around the world, frequently as a keynote speaker. He has served as on expert panels convened by the Canadian Pediatric Society, the Ontario Network of Child and Adolescent Inpatient Psychiatric Services and others, consulted on provincial curriculum for the Ontario Ministry of Education, and been interviewed by outlets such as The Globe and Mail, BBC News Magazine, The Christian Science Monitor, Radio Canada International and CBC’s The National.

It was a great St. Patrick’s day at KES!

Mrs. Quirk and her class supported a  Leprechaun trap and house building contest. They watched all the videos and helped determine who won the prizes.  They had some exceptional entries including stop motion videos, robotic mobile homes, even a trap that they tested out on their cat! Thank you to the parents who donated gift cards for prizes.

The Education Foundation of Ottawa is having it’s annual “Toonie Tuesday” fundraiser on February 23rd. Funds raised will help students in need throughout the OCDSB.

We continue to have a friendly wager with Castlefrank. The school that raises the least money (should be Castlefrank) has to wear the winner’s school colours (should be Katimavik). So whether you are all about the winning or because you are willing and able to help out those in need, please consider donating.
