The annual Scholastic book fair is still happening……just a little bit different this year!

A lot of things may be different this year, but good news – the Scholastic Book Fair is still coming! Starting November 16th until the 30th, you are invited to shop the new VIRTUAL book fair format.
A fall tradition at Castlefrank and Katimavik schools, the Scholastic Book Fair provides access to a wide variety of books for all ages and reading levels, in both English and French. Every purchase made using our unique shopping link will help provide our school community with new library and classroom resources. Additional reminders will be sent out in the next few weeks, but in the meantime please mark your calendars and feel free to share the shopping link with friends and family so that they can support too!
Want a sneak peak? Check out http://scholastic.ca/bookfairs/featuredbooks to see some of the featured books that will be available, or check out the Junior Book Fair Flyer and Senior Book Fair Flyer.

First Council meeting tomorrow, Wednesday Oct 14th. Virtual – Google Meets !!

Katimavik School Council will hold their first meeting and general election Wednesday October 14th at 7pm. This year all meetings will be via Google Meet and pre-registration will be required. Even if you have never been to a meeting before please consider joining us. Perhaps you are interested in volunteering for a council executive position. Every year elections are held for key council positions such as Chair, Vice/co-Chair, Secretary, Treasurer, and OCSAC representative. The nomination and self nomination forms that were sent out last week by Principal Mary Jane Johnson will be due by 9am Tuesday October 13th. Too much of a commitment? Many parents/guardians serve as “members at large”, attend meetings only and are able to vote on all council decisions such as the allocation of fundraising dollars.

Council plays a vital role in connecting parents/guardians with the educators who spend countless hours with our children. When you get involved in school council, you get the scoop on what is happening at our school and the school board, while having the chance to speak up on the decisions that will help improve our student’s school environment. School Council meets on the fourth Wednesday of the month with school staff representatives to discuss what is happening at the school. We share ideas, plan events and look at how we can work together to make our school a better experience for all.

To register for the Google Meet please email sc-katimavikes@ocdsb.ca and the link to the meeting along with the meeting  agenda will be sent to you once available.

Update with a Q and A for hot lunch refunds…..thank you for your patience!

Further information from School Council regarding the hot lunch program refunds.

We have heard from many parents with questions about the hot lunch refunds and wanted to provide everyone with the same answers along with further information.

The hot lunch program at Katimavik ES is very popular among our families. Proceeds from the programs go to supporting student learning and experiences at Katimavik, funding special projects and providing donations to community partners. While the 2019-2020 school year will always be remembered as a unique one, School Council was able to provide some funding for these types of projects. Prior to the March Break, School Council was able to support several student experiences including an Arts performance in November, the visit by Eric Walters in December, Scientists in School workshops for some classes, providing teachers with a stipend for supplies to support learning, and providing a donation to the Education Foundation.

You asked:

Q: I don’t want a refund cheque; can I keep this as a credit for next year’s hot lunch program?

A: No, unfortunately we do not know if School Council will be able to offer a hot lunch program next year and if not, we would be in a similar situation.

Q: I don’t want a refund cheque, can I donate my refund to School Council?

A: YES! School Council will allocate all of the donated funds to a special project. When School Council reconvenes next school year, we bring forward the topic for discussion and consideration on how to use these donations. Unfortunately School Council is not able to issue charitable tax receipts for your donation.

Q: How can I find out how much my refund is?

A: Contact our School Council treasurer, Carol Mothersill (cmothersill@rogers.com) before May 29 with your child’s name and class code and she will provide you with a summary.

Q: What if I can’t pick up my refund cheque?

A: All cheques that cannot be or aren’t picked up will be mailed to you by the school administration.

Thank you to all our parent volunteers who give their time to making the hot lunch program such a huge success! Throughout the year, they have launched and organized the programs managed the relationships with our service providers and are at school delivering the lunches every hot lunch day. THANK YOU!

Hot lunch program refunds…..cheques will be issued, pick up date pending

Dear Katimavik families,

The following message contains important updates about the Hot Lunch Programs (pizza, hot dogs, popcorn, Subway and milk) and the Grade 8 dinner/dance at Katimavik Elementary school. If your child(ren) did not order any of these food items this year or participating in the grade 8 dinner/dance, please disregard the message below.

As schools will not be re-opening for in-class learning this year, School Council will be issuing refunds for all pre-paid orders which were scheduled from March 23rd until the end of the current school year (a total of 12 pizza days, 6 hot dog days, 3 popcorn days, 3 Subway days and 60 milk days). In addition, School Council is assisting the parent organizing committee for Grade 8 dinner/dance by adding the $50 refund for this event to the hot lunch refund.

This decision is supported by the Ottawa Carleton District School Board.

For all families who had placed orders for pizza, hot dogs, popcorn, Subway or milk, or paid for the Grade 8 dinner/dance your refunds will be issued via cheque. Each family will receive one cheque representing the sum for all programs subscribed for each child at school. Cheques will be available to you when the school opens to parents/guardians to pick up their child(ren)’s belongings. Those cheques not picked up at this time will be mailed by the school. Please watch for information from the school on when the school will open for you to pickup your child(ren)’s belongings.

School Council volunteers will start processing the refunds on Wednesday May 27, and we appreciate your patience while they do so. If you have not received your expected refund by June 22, please contact kesschoolcouncil@gmail.com to follow up.

We thank you once again for your patience and understanding during these unprecedented times, and wish you continued health and wellbeing.
